ADHD / Behavioural Problems in children

Mental health problems in children and adults are similar in nature. It can be difficult for a parent to identify if the child is mentally ill; this can result in the child not receiving the necessary treatment at the early stages, which paves way for further deterioration of the child’s mental health.

Types-

The various types of mental illnesses that can affect children are:

1. Depression and Anxiety Disorders:

Anxiety disorders may occur in children; sadness, irritability, clinginess, worry, aches and pains, refusal to go to school, not gaining weight, poor attendances, poor performance at school, decreased play time

2. Autism Spectrum Disorder and low IQ:

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that usually occurs in the early stages of childhood. It impairs the child’s communication and speech. It can also cause bbehavioural problems such as irritability, aggression, hallucinations, sadness, sleeping issues

3. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD):

It is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.

Children with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school. Symptoms sometimes lessen with age. However, some people never completely outgrow their ADHD symptoms. But they can learn strategies to be successful.

While treatment can help a great deal with management of symptoms. Treatment typically involves medications and behavioral interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in outcome, especially with regards to the child’s academic performance.

This disorder occurs when the child loses touch with reality/difficulty concentration/ fearfulness/rapid mood changes/ irritability
